Appalachian Valley

Engine struggling up and down a starved highway,

Moved by a line of those who made it out.

The cold, white afternoon shows the cold whites.

We nickel-and-dime.

“But its not your time.”

Bill day.

Which may as well be every day.

Bill day.

But if I’m still long enough, wrapped in layer upon layer on my skin,

I can feel the heat, as the early sunset disappears over the mountains.

There’s a path of promise and one of less.

The junction has no signs.

And the rail costs a lot more than a day’s wage.

Finely tuned; I’m tuned in.

I’m holding my kill. I need the hunger to make it a meal.

Back in the city, where dreams don’t exist anymore,

I was force-fed.

Now, I take it in spoonfuls,

After I’m sure that I’ve cleaned all the rust off the spoon.
